it's time to stop being afraid of the nra. time to stop changing the subject when guns are brought up. you, democratic politicians, can run on common sense gun restrictions, and you can win. for the first time in decades, there is now a political price to be paid for gun extremism, and i have got an idea for your first commercial. did you happen to see wayne lapierre on "meet the press"? that does it for us on "the cycle." karen finney is in the chair for martin bashir and it is all yours. >> thanks, krystal. good afternoon. i'm karen finney in for martin bashir on this thursday, december 27th. the president is back in washington, the senate is working against the clock, and speaker boehner, yeah, he's m.i.a. >> no new negotiations are scheduled. >> congress has five days to strike a deal before the end of the year deadline. >> they're calling it the fiscal cliff. [ speaking foreign language ] >> john boehner seems to care more about keeping his speakership than about keeping the nation on firm financial footing. >> let's take

when you see some say the nra cannot be saved. there is no messaging that will work for them at this point. the politics are against them. that's where they become desperate just like the tobacco lobbyists did when they were up against it. in the end the politics is not going to work for them on this track. and they're going to change. >> so we've -- between newtown and christmas eve, chances that we are going to get meaningful gun control yes or no, richard you first and then you julian. >> yes. >> julian? >> yes. particularly if there is a concerted movement over many months. >> it was a yes or no. it was just a yes or no. >> but there's a key proviseo. there. every time we've done this, the nra counts on the clock. that the public will shift attention over time. the key here is the public todays focused. but that's the key contingency. >> i think the sad reality of the christmas eve incident is that we'll continue to see gun violence. sadly there will continue to be examples that we can point to to try to keep the pressure on.

we had a poll of nra members and gun owners and what we found was surprising. 74% of nra members thinks everybody who wants to buy a gun should have a background chick. 71% of nra members think if you are on a terror watch list you shouldn't be able to buy a gun. there's a broad and durable consensus about common sense things you can do and the nra members agree. it's the nra leadership that has a problem with it. >> goldie, you were just referencing these assault weapons, but even if an assault weapons ban was re-enacted, what about all those firearms that are already in circulation? how do we resolve the existing presence of lethal weapons in america today? >> you know, the last ban on assault weapons was riddled, literally riddled, with loopholes, including grandfathering in the right to keep the assault rifle that you already had in your possession. i am against that loophole. i am against, you know, the kinds of loopholes that allow gun shows to sell guns without proper identification to private buyers. you know, i think that we have got to look at reasonable, sensible laws that ke

i'm not sure why the nra is against any sort of control on people having guns. i don't think it's enough to say that laws don't prevent people from getting guns because that's just saying -- >> i'm not saying that. >> i know you're not but a lot of gun rights lobby says that. it's like there's nothing we can do, call uncle, and we have to live with these killings week after week. >> and i agree with everything you just mentioned there. the assault weapons, extended magazines, the gun show loophole, i agree with all of that. i just think when we speak in broad terms, when we use statistics about gun violence, it sounds to a lot of people like we want to ban guns completely, and we have to be smart and strategic if we're going to win political battles. so that's why i'm urging caution in terms of the way that we talk about this and being specific about what it is, what solutions we're proposing because i think there's very few people out there who would say, complete ban on guns or even complete ban on handguns. so that's my only word of caution in this particular

i don't know that the nra has the kind of grip, the physical grip, that it believes it has. it does, however, have a psychological grip, and i think it's time we broke it. >> right. karen, the president was incredulous at wednesday's press conference when it was suggested the political will to act on gun control will fade in a brief amount of time. take a listen. >> i would hope that our memories aren't so short that of what we saw in newtown isn't lingering with us, that we don't remain passionate about it only a month later? >> isn't it incredible that he was having to say that in less than a week after a horrific shooting? >> yeah. it is, but let's think about the reality of this town. here we are awaiting, you know, the fiscal cliff, and we all know if anything is going to happen, it's going to come right down to the wire because things don't happen in this town, this is the new habit, i guess, until we are in a crisis mode, and so i think the question -- the president is exactly right. there's no reason that a month from now there shouldn't be the same level of passion

the gun rights activists and the nra don't stop talking about it. they regain the traction they had momentarily lost. there is still hope for that issue, but the president really needs to move on that in january wile also remembering that the first three priorities are the economy, the economy, and the economy. >> how -- i think part of the sad reality is there will continue to be gun violence between now and the time that any legislation is proposed, but how do we keep the pressure on, and again i think this question of getting something meaningful done because as dana pointed out, we know the nra isn't stopping. they are knocking on doors and making phone calls. how do we make sure something doesn't get watered down in the enand we get something meaningful? >> the key thing is to remember that the president has the bully pulpit and there are 535 people on capitol hill who can do something by sending a bill to the president that he can sign into law, but none of that is going to happen unless the anger that was there in the immediate hours and days
